Health and Safety Awareness Training

The focus of this training is on general awareness of rights and responsibilities of workers in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). It does not, in any way, replace the OHSA or its regulations or any other knowledge, information or training you will require as a supervisor or worker. 

This training includes topics Ontario employees are required to know about regarding basic occupational health and safety. This course explains your rights, responsibilities and what is required from you as a worker on the job in Ontario. Prevention - preventing injuries and illnesses at work - starts here, but it doesn't end here.

Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers

Who is required to take this training?

For anyone who is a worker who performs work or supplies a service for the university and does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.

Everyone in the workplace, from the employer to the newest worker, has different but important duties to keep the workplace safe. Because employers have the most authority in the workplace, they have the greatest responsibility but it’s important for your own safety that you understand everyone’s health and safety duties, including yours.
Learning Objectives Upon completion of Health and Safety Awareness training, participants will be able to:
  • Know and describe your rights and responsibilities under the Act.
  • Understand and describe the duties of the employer, supervisor and workers under the Act.
  • Explain the RACE method for recognizing, assessing, controlling and evaluating workplace hazards.
  • Explain the role of a health and safety representative and a Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Understand the roles of the Ministry, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and entities designated under section 22.4 of the Act with respect to Health and Safety.
  • Know where to go for help.

 

Health and Safety Awareness Training for Supervisors

Who is required to take this training?

For those who have charge of a workplace or authority over a worker. 

Everyone in the workplace, from the employer to the newest worker, has different but important duties to keep the workplace safe. Because employers have the most authority in the workplace, they have the greatest responsibility for health and safety. Supervisors are next in line. Since your job involves taking direction from your employer and giving direction to the workers you supervise, it’s important for you to understand the health and safety responsibilities of everyone in the workplace, including yours.
Learning Objectives

Upon completion of Health and Safety Orientation for Supervisors, participants will be able to:

  • Know and describe your rights and responsibilities under the Act.
  • Understand and describe the duties of the employer, supervisor and workers under the Act
  • Explain the RACE method for recognizing, assessing, controlling and evaluating workplace hazards.
  • Explain the role of a health and safety representative and a Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Understand the roles of the Ministry, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and entities designated under section 22.4 of the Act with respect to Health and Safety.
  • Feel confident in asking your employer questions about workplace health and safety and your duties.

To complete this compulsory training, please visit the Health and Safety Course Bundle and select the the module, Worker or Supervisor, that best suits your position.

Training Frequency:

Training must be completed as soon after point of hire as possible during orientation but no later than 4 weeks after. Training renewal does not have specific time period or expiry date.

Re-training will be required if any of the following occurs:

  • Someone demonstrates a lack of understanding and knowledge about Health and Safety Orientation Guidelines.
  • Conditions in the workplace have changed and there is new information available
