About Durham Region
Located in the eastern portion of the Greater Toronto Area, Durham Region is home to rolling hills, rural charm and urban sophistication. Durham Region includes the Cities of Oshawa and Pickering, the Towns of Ajax and Whitby, the Municipality of Clarington, and the Townships of Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge.

Arts and culture
The Durham Council for the Arts, established in 1963, as well as the PineRidge Arts Council, support and promote arts throughout Durham Region. There are a number of excellent art galleries, including The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, which houses more than 3,500 Canadian art masterpieces, as well as paintings by the Group of Seven.
The Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra has become one of Canada's best regional orchestras. Music and drama can be enjoyed at many community theatres across the region. Several heritage and historical museums provide a glimpse into Durham's past.

Business and industry
Durham's diverse economic landscape includes leading players from automotive, energy, manufacturing and agricultural sectors. The region is strategically located as the eastern gateway to the Greater Toronto Area and is an emerging power in Ontario. The region has one of the fastest growing populations in the country and is well-positioned for growth and prosperity.
Durham Region is becoming a leader in research and development and our university is partnering with many local companies to advance development in the areas of vehicle design, robotics, alternative energy technologies and biotechnology, to name a few.

Shopping and movies
The Oshawa Centre, a short transit ride from campus, is one of the largest indoor malls in Canada. Many brand-name and specialty shops and restaurants can be found along with a theatre complex. Pickering Town Centre is home to more than 200 shops and services. The historic downtown areas of Port Perry and Bowmanville offer a mix of boutiques, antique stores and cafes. Many country stores throughout the region offer a delightful shopping experience as well.

Sports and recreation
In addition to being the hockey home of the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals, who play in downtown Oshawa at the spectacular Tribute Communities Centre sports and entertainment complex, the region has a wealth of sports facilities, fitness centres and golf courses. You'll find downhill and cross-country skiing facilities within 30 minutes of the campus. As well, you can enjoy hiking, walking, in-line skating and biking along many scenic trails.
